Overview
This is a fantastic opportunity to join the editorial team for our flagship journal, Chemical Science. We are looking for a Scientific Editor to join the team, and you will be based in our Beijing office. You will be working closely with our team in China to proactively develop and grow relationships with Chinese researchers, as well as playing a critical part in the publishing process for the journal. You will be implementing the development strategy of Chemical Science through organising and supporting outreach activities in China, as well as commissioning new research for the journal, initial assessment of articles when they are submitted, and working closely with the journal’s Associate Editors to support the peer-review. Reporting into the journal’s Senior Editor and working with the journal’s Executive Editor and Deputy Editor, who are based in the UK, you will also contribute to the journal’s strategy and development. This is a varied role in which you will use your scientific knowledge, strategic and interpersonal skills to assist in selecting and then communicating the RSC’s highest impact publications to the chemical science community worldwide. An essential part of your role will be to provide excellent customer service to our Associate Editors, authors and reviewers.
What you will be doing :
- Attracting world class authors to publish in the journal through direct invitation, via in person meetings at conferences, site visits and desk-based research, as well as gathering feedback and developing knowledge of the community and recent scientific developments.
- Initial assessment of articles submitted for publication to agreed standards and assigning to Associate Editors where appropriate
- Supporting and advising the Associate Editors during manuscript-processing, to ensure scope and quality standards of the journal are implemented, and that authors receive a high level of customer service.
- Working closely with journal Editorial and Advisory Board members based in China
- Carrying out themed collection coordination and associated tasks for Chemical Science as appropriate.
- Supporting the team’s commissioning, content development and marketing activities Developing the journal’s online presence via social networks, in collaboration with Chemical Science team and Marketing team
We are looking for;
A good honours degree in science (chemical science normally preferred)Good organisational and time-management skills are required together with the ability to work under pressure, prioritise and to meet deadlinesGood attention to detailA proactive approach to problem solving is requiredExcellent communication skills in interacting with internal and external contacts are essentialEnthusiasm and a desire to learn about the latest developments in the chemical sciencesProven ability to work well as a teamA PhD or postgraduate experience and / or practical experience in STM publishingExperience of working in an academic research environment and building professional networks is highly desirableWillingness to travel nationallyFluent in Mandarin and EnglishPlease download the full job description
